Canny Marshall was commissioned to produce a short evaluation film showcasing projects funded by the Local Heritage Grant Scheme in Torbay. Unfolding Heritage is a 12-minute documentary-style piece featuring the people and projects behind the scheme.

Working alongside director Amanda Bluglass and camera/editor Jake Cauty, we set out to tell a story that went beyond funding and forms — to get to the heart of what heritage means when it’s powered by community.

Thanks to photographers Beccy Strong and Annemieke Goldswaine-Hein, we created a striking gallery of headshots showing the range of people who took part: school kids, artists, archaeologists, local business owners, rock-obsessed creatives and history lovers — many of whom had never applied for funding before, but were encouraged and supported to make their ideas real.

It’s a project set within the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark — the golden thread running through the culture and identity that makes this place so special. It reminded me how powerful film can be: uplifting, authentic, and full of stories from an incredible community.
